Unit Rates and Percent

Lesson 11

Math

Unit 2

6th Grade

Lesson 11 of 14

Objective

Find a percent of a quantity.

Common Core Standards

Core Standards

  • 6.RP.A.3.C — Find a percent of a quantity as a rate per 100 (e.g., 30% of a quantity means 30/100 times the quantity); solve problems involving finding the whole, given a part and the percent.

Foundational Standards

  • 4.NF.C.6
  • 5.NF.B.5
  • 5.NF.B.5.A
  • 5.NF.B.5.B
  • 5.NF.B.6

Criteria for Success

  1. Find a percent of a quantity using ratio reasoning and strategies, including mental math (where appropriate), double number lines, and tables.
  2. Find $$x$$% of a quantity by multiply the quantity by $$\frac{x}{100}$$.
  3. Recognize equivalent forms of $$\frac{x}{100}$$ that can make a problem more efficient or simple to solve.
  4. Find a percent of a quantity where the percent is greater than 100%.
  5. Use benchmark percentages to assess the reasonableness of answers.

Tips for Teachers

  • In Lessons 11 – 13, students engage in MP.2 as they make sense of how the part, percent, and whole relate to one another, and how they can use ratio reasoning to find any one of the values when given the other two.
