Dilations and Similarity

Lesson 7

Math

Unit 3

10th Grade

Lesson 7 of 18

Objective

Identify measurements in dilated figures with the center of dilation on the figure directly and algebraically.

Common Core Standards

Core Standards

  • G.SRT.A.2 — Given two figures, use the definition of similarity in terms of similarity transformations to decide if they are similar; explain using similarity transformations the meaning of similarity for triangles as the equality of all corresponding pairs of angles and the proportionality of all corresponding pairs of sides.

Foundational Standards

  • 8.G.A.1

Criteria for Success

  1. Given a triangle that has been dilated from one vertex, identify the two triangles that are in the diagram.
  2. Describe the relationship between the sides in a proportion, regardless of whether they are direct measurements or expressions that describe a measurement.
  3. Determine missing angles between similar figures (triangles and other polygons).

Anchor Problems

Triangle $${ABC}$$ is dilated from point $$A$$ by a scale factor of $${2.5}$$. Below are some measurements:

$$m∠{ABC}=35^{\circ}$$
$$AB=4$$
$$AC=6$$

What is the length of $${\overline{BB'}}$$
If $${BC=x+2}$$, write an expression that describes the length of $${\overline{B'C'}}$$

Target Task

Identify the strategy that the student below used to find the measure of $${BA}$$. Then, describe a different method for finding this value, describing how you know that the two triangles are dilations of one another.
