Percent and Scaling

Lesson 14

Math

Unit 5

7th Grade

Lesson 14 of 19

Objective

Use a scale to determine actual measurements.

Common Core Standards

Core Standards

  • 7.G.A.1 — Solve problems involving scale drawings of geometric figures, including computing actual lengths and areas from a scale drawing and reproducing a scale drawing at a different scale.
  • 7.RP.A.3 — Use proportional relationships to solve multistep ratio and percent problems. Examples: simple interest, tax, markups and markdowns, gratuities and commissions, fees, percent increase and decrease, percent error.

Foundational Standards

  • 7.RP.A.2

Criteria for Success

  1. Interpret a scale in a scale drawing.
  2. Use a scale in a scale drawing to find actual measurements using strategies such as a table, equation, or proportion.

Anchor Problems

Problem 1

Vincent proposes an idea to the student government at his school to install a basketball hoop along with a court, as shown in the diagram below. The school administration tells Vincent that in order for his plan to be approved, it must fit in the empty lot on the school property. The empty lot measures 25 feet by 75 feet.

Will the lot be big enough for the court Vincent planned? Justify your answer.

Problem 3

Sherry designed her garden as shown below in the diagram.

a.   After designing the garden, Sherry decided to build the garden 75% of the size represented in the diagram. What will be the outside dimensions of the actual garden?

b.   If Sherry plans to use a wire fence to go around the garden and to divide each section of the garden, how much fence does she need?

c.   The fence costs $3.25 per foot plus 7% sales tax. What is the total cost of the fence?

Target Task

A company sells rugs online on their website. The image of one rug on the website measures $$2\frac{1}{2}"$$ by $$3\frac{1}{4}"$$. The scale for the image that corresponds to the actual size of the rug is $$1$$ inch: $$2\frac{1}{2}$$ feet. Find the actual measurements of the rug.
