Solve percent problems using benchmark fractions and percentages, with and without written work.

Criteria for Success


  1. Know the equivalent percentages for benchmark fractions, including $$\frac{1}{10}$$, $$\frac{1}{4}$$, and $$\frac{1}{2}$$, and their multiples.
  2. Mentally solve percent problems by reasoning about benchmark fractions and percentages.

Tips for Teachers


In this lesson, students will preview solving percent problems by using familiar fraction concepts. In later lessons in this unit, students will solve more challenging percent problems using different strategies. The problems in this lesson all lend themselves toward being answered using mental strategies and do not necessarily require the use of a tool. Knowing how to work with these benchmark percentages will support students in reflecting on the reasonableness of their answers (MP.1).

Represent each fraction as a percent by completing the table. Use the two double number lines below to show your work.
