Solve percent problems, including finding percent when given a part and a whole.

Criteria for Success


  1. Understand how various aspects of a percent problem are related (the whole amount, the remaining amount, the part, the percentage of, the percentage remaining).
  2. Find the percent when given a part and a whole by writing a fraction of the part over the whole and finding an equivalent fraction over 100. 
  3. Find the percent when given a part and a whole by dividing the part by the whole and writing the decimal as a fraction over 100 (or equivalently, multiplying by 100).

Tips for Teachers


  • Students may need to review or practice skills from 5.NBT.6 before they can fully access this lesson. 
  • In Lessons 11 – 13, students engage in MP.2 as they make sense of how the part, percent, and whole relate to one another, and how they can use ratio reasoning to find any one of the values when given the other two.
