Lesson 15

Math

Unit 7

6th Grade

Lesson 15 of 17

Objective

Create nets and use them to find surface area of three-dimensional figures.

Common Core Standards

Core Standards

  • 6.G.A.4 — Represent three-dimensional figures using nets made up of rectangles and triangles, and use the nets to find the surface area of these figures. Apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.

Criteria for Success

  1. Use features of a prism or pyramid to draw a two-dimensional net for the figure with measurements.
  2. Understand that surface area describes the area that covers all surfaces of a three-dimensional figure without overlap or gaps.
  3. Use a net to find the surface area of prisms and pyramids.

Tips for Teachers

With multiple faces and calculations to keep track of, it is important for students to stay organized to understand and check their work. Writing the surface area as a numerical expression is one way to stay organized.

Lesson Materials

  • Three-dimensional solids (Teacher set) — We suggest purchasing a teacher set of folding nets for this lesson in order to model to students.
  • Optional: Graph Paper (2-3 sheets per student)

Anchor Problems

Problem 1

The rectangular prism below has dimensions of 8 × 5 × 3 units.

a.   On a piece of graph paper, draw the different rectangle faces that make up the prism and label the dimensions.

b.   On the same piece of graph paper, use the faces from part (a) to draw the net of the prism.
