  1. Find the volume of pictorial representations of unconventional three-dimensional shapes by counting unit cubes.
  2. Find the volume of pictorial representations of rectangular prisms by counting unit cubes.
  3. Understand that a rectangular prism is a three-dimensional shape that has rectangular sides.

a.   The goal of the game is to get your partner to build a prism that matches the picture of your given prism.

  • Partner A: Look at the image of the prism provided to you. Describe it to your partner.
  • Partner B: Build the prism your partner describes to you.

b.   Place the two prisms next to each other and discuss what is the same and what is different about them.

c.   Switch roles and repeat.

  • How did you decide to draw a figure with a volume of 7 cubic units in #4? Is there more than one way to draw a figure with the same volume? 
  • What was Joyce’s mistake in #4? What do you need to think about when counting cubic units in drawings? How is it different from counting them in person? Is it possible for a drawing to fool you? Might some cubes be hidden, or might there be gaps that you cannot see?
