Objective


Place any fraction on a number line with endpoints greater than 0.

Core Standards

  • 3.NF.A.2 — Understand a fraction as a number on the number line; represent fractions on a number line diagram.
  • 3.NF.A.3.C — Express whole numbers as fractions, and recognize fractions that are equivalent to whole numbers. Example: express 3 in the form 3 = 3/1; recognize that 6/1 = 6. Example: locate 4/4 and 1 at the same point of a number line diagram.

Criteria for Success


  1. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning to generalize when a fraction will be located at the same point as a whole number on a number line (continued from Lesson 9) (MP.8).
  2. Plot a given fraction greater than 1 on a number line that spans one whole whose lesser endpoint is not 0 by determining the fraction equivalent to the lesser endpoint and counting up by fractional units from that endpoint (MP.5).
  3. Plot a given fraction greater than 1 on a number line that spans more than one whole.

Tips for Teachers


  • Lessons 9 and 10 nicely prepare students for a more extensive discussion of the equivalence of fractions and whole numbers to come in Lesson 14.
