Shapes and Their Perimeter

Lesson 10

Math

Unit 5

3rd Grade

Lesson 10 of 16

Objective

Solve word problems involving finding perimeter given the side lengths.

Common Core Standards

Core Standards

  • 3.MD.D.8 — Solve real world and mathematical problems involving perimeters of polygons, including finding the perimeter given the side lengths, finding an unknown side length, and exhibiting rectangles with the same perimeter and different areas or with the same area and different perimeters.

Foundational Standards

  • 3.OA.D.8

Criteria for Success

  1. Find the perimeter of a shape that is described but no visual model is provided.
  2. Write an equation to represent the perimeter of a shape (optionally including simplified equations, such as a multiplication equation for a regular polygon) (MP.2).

Problem 2

The Pentagon is a building in Washington, D.C. that houses the Department of Defense. The building is in the shape of a regular pentagon. Jason built a model of the Pentagon for a social studies project. He made each outside wall 33 centimeters long. What is the perimeter of Jason’s model Pentagon?

Discussion of Problem Set

  • What multiplication equation could you use to solve #4? What is 18 tens?
  • How did you solve #5 with only one given measurement? What did you need to remember about squares from previous grades?
  •  Explain to a partner how you solved #6. If you thought of the problem as 24 x 3, how did you compute that?
  • What made #7 more difficult than the previous problems? How did you solve?
  • Describe a different real-world situation in which it would be necessary to find the perimeter.

Target Task

Hiram wants to frame a square-sized painting. One side length of the square painting measures 7 inches. What is the total length of frame Hiram will need?
