Multiplication and Division, Part 2

Lesson 21

Math

Unit 3

3rd Grade

Lesson 21 of 23

Objective

Identify patterns in single or multiple rows/columns of the multiplication table.

Common Core Standards

Core Standards

  • 3.OA.C.7 — Fluently multiply and divide within 100, using strategies such as the relationship between multiplication and division (e.g., knowing that 8 × 5 = 40, one knows 40 ÷ 5 = 8) or properties of operations. By the end of Grade 3, know from memory all products of two one-digit numbers.
  • 3.OA.D.9 — Identify arithmetic patterns (including patterns in the addition table or multiplication table), and explain them using properties of operations. For example, observe that 4 times a number is always even, and explain why 4 times a number can be decomposed into two equal addends.

Foundational Standards

  • 3.OA.B.5

Criteria for Success

  1. Look for structure to identify patterns in specific rows or columns of the multiplication table (e.g., the twos row/column consists of all even numbers) and explain why those patterns exist (MP.7).
  2. Look for structure to see that the distributive property can be observed in the multiplication table (e.g., the square corresponding with $$7\times4$$ will contain the sum of the values in the squares corresponding with $$5\times4$$ and $$2\times4$$) (MP.7).
  3. Look for structure to see that the associative property can be observed in the multiplication table (e.g., the square corresponding with $$8\times6$$ will be double the value in the square corresponding with $$4\times6$$) (MP.7).
  4. Make use of structure to use known products to find unknown products using the properties of operations (MP.7).

Tips for Teachers

  • Students may benefit from the interactive version of the multiplication table shown in Anchor Tasks #1, #2, and #3, which can be found and is explained here on Steve Wyborney's blog.
  • If you use the interactive version of the multiplication table for the Anchor Tasks, be sure to either provide students with a copy of this Multiplication Table or display one for the whole class for use on the Problem Set and Target Task.

Problem 4

In each row, write down at least two multiplication facts you can figure out because you know the given multiplication fact in the left column. Be prepared to share your reasoning.

If I know... Then I know...
$$3\times5$$ $$3\times6$$$$6\times5$$$$3\times10$$$$4\times5$$
$$2\times4$$
$$4\times10$$
$$7\times 2$$
$$5\times8$$

Problem Set

Answer Keys

Discussion of Problem Set

  • Were there any rows in the multiplication table in which you found a new pattern we haven’t yet explored? Which row and what was the pattern?
  • How are the nines facts related to the tens facts? How can you see this in the multiplication table? How can you use this to help solve nines facts?
  • How can you use your multiplication table to solve $$16\times7$$  despite the multiplication table not going up to $$16$$
  • How can you create a row for $$19$$? What existing rows would you use to construct it?

Target Task

Problem 1

Look at the 4 and 8 rows in the multiplication table. What relationship do you see? Why does this relationship exist?

Problem 2

Explain how the multiplication table shows the following relationship.

$$7\times8=(5\times8)+(2\times8)$$
