Writing Prompt

Choose one of the three Dorothea Lange photographs. How does that photograph reflect Steinbeck's depiction of the life and experiences of the migrant worker? Be sure to refer to specific details from both the article and photograph to support your ideas.

Criteria for Success

  • Identifies parallels between Steinbeck's descriptions and one of the Lange photographs.
  • Might identify Steinbeck's description of migrant workers' life on the road, traveling from farm to farm, and connect that to details from the photo.
  • Might identify Steinbeck's description of the impoverished conditions migrant workers faced at labor camps, and connect that to details from the photo.
  • Might identify Steinbeck's idea that migrant workers were hardy and resolute, despite the pain of their circumstances, and connect that to details from the photo.
