To ensure that students are prepared for the next lesson, have students complete the following reading for homework. Use guidance from the next lesson to identify any additional language or background support students may need while independently engaging with the text.

  • Book: Refugee by Alan Gratz  pp. 1 – 17

While reading, answer the following questions.

  • Who are the three protagonists in this story?

  • In what city/country and year does each live?

  • Who comes to Josef’s house in the middle of the night?

  • What happens to Josef’s father?

  • What are Isabel’s neighbors hiding in their shed? Why?

  • Why does Mahmoud take a different route home from school every day?

  • How does Mahmoud respond when he sees a boy attacked in the street? Why?

Notes for Teachers

In preparation for this lesson, teachers will need to select 1–2 up-to-date article(s) about the Syrian refugee crisis. Because The Unwanted was published in 2018, the aim of this lesson is to provide students with the most current facts and information available.  

If possible, find an article that includes statistics about the number of refugees currently living outside of Syria, public opinion about refugees in their host countries, and the current political situation in Syria.
