What is the central idea of the article?

Based on the article and on the pieces of text you have analyzed today, what can you conclude about Ralph? Piggy? Jack? Explain.

Key Questions


  • According to Maslow, what are humans motivated by? According to Maslow, why is this significant?
  • Look at the chart. What do you notice about the types of needs at the top of the chart? How are they similar to, and different from, the types of needs at the bottom?
  • Find a piece of evidence from Chapter 1 that shows the boys are concerned with physiological factors.
  • Who says each of these quotations? What need is motivating the character? Where does that need rank on the hierarchy?

So as we can decide what to do. We've heard names. That's Johnny. Those two - they're twins, Sam 'n Eric. Which is Eric - ? You? No - you're Sam.'"

Following along with the focus on discussion, today would be a good day to ask students to discuss/debate in small groups. There are two sample quotations for them to use to draw conclusions about characters based on Maslow's hierarchy. Consider adding more quotations and ask students to work in groups to come to a conclusion.
