Target Task

Writing Prompt

Describe the power dynamic between Ralph and Piggy. Use evidence from Chapter 1 to support your answer.

Key Questions

  • What kind of character is Ralph? How do you know?
  • What kind of character is Piggy? How do you know?
  • How would you characterize the relationship between them? Are there any characters from other novels you have read who have had a similar relationship? (Perhaps draw a parallel between George and Lennie, highlighting that while the power dynamic is similar, George's feelings toward Lennie were much warmer than Ralph's toward Piggy.)

Notes

Students will need some knowledge of WWII and the level of destruction it caused. We suggest using an excerpt of the article, Destruction and Reconstruction (1945-1958), a short lecture, or an activity to assess prior knowledge at the beginning of class.
