Target Task

Writing Prompt

Choose one of the quotations we discussed today and explain how it helps to convey the author's message.

Key Questions

  • On page 201, the final description of Jack is as follows: “… a little boy who wore the remains of an extraordinary black cap on his red hair and who carried the remains of a pair of spectacles at his waist”. Why do you think Golding used the phrase “little boy” to describe the menacing, horrible Jack in the end of the book? What is he trying to tell us about mankind?
  • The book ends with these sentences: “The officer, surrounded by these noises, was moved and a little embarrassed. He turned away to give them time to pull themselves together; and waited, allowing his eyes to rest on the trim cruiser in the distance” How does this quotation contribute to the idea that, in the end, chaos wins over order?
  • “Then the sea breathed again in a long, slow sigh, the water boiled white and pink over the rock; and when it went, sucking back again, the body of Piggy was gone” (180). What does Piggy symbolize in the novel? What message is Golding conveying to the reader through Piggy’s death? Through the disappearance of his body?
