Key Questions

  • Describe Mr. Vaslov. (Make sure to use details from the entire chapter. This question pushes at standard RL2.5 where the beginning of the story introduces the characters.)
  • Describe Freddie.
  • What does the phrase "taped up like a mummy" mean? What does it show about the box?
  • What was inside of the box? How did Freddie respond? How did Mr. Vaslov respond?
  • Where does Freddie think the shoes came from? Why?
  • Why does the author start the chapter with the sentence "A box changed my life"?

Before starting the text, do a book preview with students. Read the back of the book, look at the pictures on the cover and back of the book, and read the table of contents and have students make predictions about what will happen in the book and why. Predictions should be grounded in something that they have seen or read in the preview.
