Target Task

Writing Prompt

Is the narrator a "sell out"? Explain your opinion using evidence from the chapter.

Key Questions

  • p. 364: What movement does Ras the Exhorter represent? How do the members of the brotherhood view him and his movement? How do they see themselves as different?
  • What is the goal of the "street meetings"?
  • Describe Brother Tod Clifton - his physical appearance, his role, etc. How is he different from what the narrator initially expects? (p. 367)
  • p. 367: Why does Brother Tod mention Marcus Garvey? What is his impression of Garvey? How is this ironic given what you have just read? (He is a nationalist, very different from their approach.)
  • Track the diction the author uses to describe the fight scene. Which diction do you find especially powerful/meaningful? Why? (Students might bring up the references to the cold weather, the use of the word "bull," the term "Uncle Tom", "couldn't tell ours from theirs," etc.)
  • What mood is established through this diction? (confusion, violence, chaos, "blindness")
  • p. 370: Why is Ras crying?
  • p. 370: "You my brother, mahn. Brothers are the same color, how the hell you call these white men brother?" What does this statement reveal about Ras's beliefs? What else do you learn about Ras's beliefs in the next few pages? What do you learn about his opinion of the Brotherhood?
  • p. 372: What is the significance of the flashback to the Battle Royal?
  • How does the run-in with Ras impact the narrator? How does it impact Brother Tod?
