Explain how the author uses juxtaposition in chapter 4 to reveal the impact that waiting has had on Manna and Lin’s love. Use evidence from the chapter.

Chapter 4:

  • Track the diction and phrasing the author uses to describe Lin and Manna’s wedding preparations on pp. 236–237. How would you describe the author’s tone? Pay attention to what is there and what is not there. (Are there mentions of love? Romance? Excitement? as one might expect? Why not?)
  • Track the descriptions of Lin and Manna’s appearances on pp. 238–239. How do they contribute to mood and tone?
  • What does Ran Su say to the bride and groom? What does he mean? How do his words impact Manna?
  • How does the author juxtapose what one would expect from a wedding with Manna and Lin’s experience of their wedding? Track examples on pp. 240–244.
  • How does his interaction with Honggan affect Lin?
  • What is the significance of the wedding scene? How does it relate to/develop the thematic topic of happiness? Are Manna and Lin happy? Use evidence to defend your position.

Chapter 5:

  • How does the narrator describe Manna and Lin as being mismatched? Does this mismatch serve as a metaphor for their relationship in general? What do you think?
  • What does Manna mean when she says, “I don’t know why…years earlier” on p. 246? How does Lin interpret this? What do you think she actually means?
  • What is happening to Manna and Lin’s health?
  • Describe the irony of Lin being teased by his colleagues. (What has he spent so many years trying to avoid?)
