Writing Prompt

How does the author’s use of questions help to develop the theme of discontent? Explain using evidence from both chapters.

Key Questions

Chapter 4:

  • How does the author develop the idea that Manna is falling in love with Lin on pp. 44–45?
  • And how does he develop the idea that she is conflicted about these feelings?
  • Who is Pingping Ma? What is her significance here?
  • On both pp. 44 and 46, the narrator shares Manna’s questions. Why? What is the impact?
  • What do we learn about Manna’s family?
  • The chapter ends with the questions, “What should Manna do?” How would you answer that question?

Chapter 5:

  • The narration is third-person omniscient, but it seems to be told from the perspective of different characters. Whose perspective did we get in chapter 4? And based on the first sentences, whose will we get in this chapter?
  • According to the first two paragraphs, how does Lin feel about Manna?
  • What do we learn about the Red Guard in these same paragraphs?
  • On p. 49, the narrator once again uses questions. What do they reveal about Lin?
  • What diction helps to build the idea that Lin is discontented? In his mind, what events have caused him to be discontented? How do you know?
  • What surprises Lin about Manna’s behavior on pp. 49–51? Why? How does he respond?
  • How does the author develop the idea that Lin is conflicted about his feelings for Manna?
  • Describe his dream. How does he feel about his dream? What do you think it means?
  • Read the last sentence on p. 54. What does it reveal about Lin? How else has the author developed his character in these chapters?
