Writing Prompt

Lin, despite thinking of himself as very rational, loves Manna deeply and cannot live without her. Agree or disagree? Use evidence from today’s reading, and the novel as a whole, to support your answer.

Key Questions

  • Although Lin professes at the end of chapter 9 that he “needed no woman,” his actions and thoughts in chapter 10 suggest otherwise. Track evidence to suggest that even rational Lin needs love.
  • Again, the narrator uses questions to reveal Lin’s internal dialogue on pp. 83–84. What kinds of questions is he asking himself? What do these questions reveal about his state of mind?
  • Describe Manna’s interactions with Lin. How do these interactions seem to impact him?
  • What does the narrator reveal about Lin at the bottom of p. 85? Why is this surprising?
