  • What is Celia’s response to El Lider’s speech on pp. 44–45?
  • Why does Garcia include the anecdote about the worker and the volunteer on p. 44?
  • What does the cane symbolize to Celia? p. 45
  • Why does the author use the word “stink” to describe the sugar?
  • When Celia returns from work, what has happened to Felicia?
  • Who is Hugo Villaverde? What can the reader infer about him based on p. 47?

Notes

  • Days 7–8 can likely be combined depending on pacing needs of the class.
  • During today’s class students should recognize the symbol of the cane as El Lider’s impact on Celia. She wishes to work for the revolution until she dies. She works tirelessly, and the cane symbolizes her hope for Cuban prosperity. On p. 45, the word “stink” reveals that her hope for Cuba is, however, overwhelming and perhaps doomed.
