Key Questions

  • How does Shakespeare build mood? What devices does he use?
  • What do lines 16–17 suggest about Lady Macbeth?
  • Shakespeare continues to build mood in lines 19–25, how?
  • Why is Macbeth afraid? (39–40)
  • Lines 47–57: What is the significance of the voice Macbeth hears?
  • Lines 60–70: What mistake has Macbeth made and how does Lady Macbeth fix it?
  • The phrase “filthy witness” refers to what?
  • How does Lady Macbeth take charge? (65–69)
  • What technique does Lady Macbeth use for effect in lines 69–70?
  • What do Montag’s and Macbeth’s “hands” have in common in both?

Notes

  • Suspense is created by: Fast-paced dialogue, symbolism of the hands/dagger, voices Macbeth hears
  • Macbeth/Montag’s hands both indicate guilt, and although they can be physically washed, they cannot be mentally washed. This can lead to a good discussion on whether we can truly be absolved from our sins.
