Writing Prompt

How does the dagger signify Macbeth’s state of mind before the murder? Use evidence from Macbeth’s monologue to support your answer.

Key Questions

  • Who is Fleance?
  • How does the setting help to create mood?
  • What is the significance of the diamond?
  • What does this show about Macbeth’s character?
  • How was Banquo’s dream an example of foreshadowing?

Analyze Macbeth’s soliloquy:

  • Is there actually a dagger there?
  • What does this mean is happening to him? Why might this be?
  • What is the significance of “the handle towards my hand?”
  • What does he command of the dagger?
  • What two senses does he speak about?
  • What does Macbeth imply with lines 50–51?
  • What does “marshal’st me” mean?
  • What does he notice on the dagger? Why is this significant?
  • What is Macbeth hoping for in lines 69–74?
  • What does the bell symbolize? Who rings it?

Notes

Here Macbeth hallucinates for the first time, which is something that will happen again when he is scared. The dagger invites him to commit the murder as does the bell, which his wife rings.
