Writing Prompt

Explain how Shakespeare reveals Macbeth’s humanity in this scene. Be sure to include both the techniques Shakespeare uses and specific examples of those techniques.

Key Questions

  • What is Macbeth referring to in lines 4–5 and why?
  • What does Macbeth accuse the servant of?
  • Pay close attention to the shift in Macbeth in lines 23–33.
  • What trait of Macbeth begins to reemerge? Why?
  • What is Macbeth’s reaction to the above? Track the emotions.

Notes

  • Macbeth is facing his own death here and shows some self-awareness.
  • The teacher could choose to substitute the word “morality” for humanity in the prompt if desired. Such a change might allow students to more explicitly prepare for the final essay of the unit.
  • Assign 5.4 for homework.
