Target Task

Discussion & Writing Prompt

On page 99, Montag thinks, "Now, he knew that he was two people, that he was, above all, Montag who knew nothing, who did not even know himself a fool, only suspected it. And he knew that he was also the old man who talked to him and talked to him…" Explain how Montag's feelings and behavior in the dinner party scene and firehouse scene reveal these two dual personalities.

Criteria for Success

  • Identifies that Montag dual personality is made up of who he once was (a fool) and who he now is (aware, like the old man).
  • Identifies that during the dinner party scene, Montag is frustrated with the meaningless conversation because he, like Faber, is aware of society's flaws.
  • Identifies that during the firehouse scene, he shows that he is still a fool, as he is being manipulated by Beatty about the danger of books.
